What is Screeding?

What is Screeding?

Screeding is a skilled technique employed by our expert fitters to smooth the substrate before installing Karndean flooring. It involves the application of a smoothing compound, meticulously spread to create an even and seamless surface. This process transforms your existing floor into an ideal canvas for the exquisite beauty of Karndean.

Why is Screeding Necessary?

Screeding is the backbone of a successful flooring installation, providing numerous benefits that contribute to the longevity and visual appeal of your Karndean flooring.

  • Surface Smoothing: Uneven floors can compromise the integrity and aesthetics of the final result. Screeding ensures that your floor is perfectly smooth, addressing any irregularities and creating a flawless foundation. The self-levelling compound used in the screeding process acts as a smoothing agent, providing an impeccably even surface that sets the stage for the installation of your Karndean flooring.
  • Enhanced Adhesion: The application of a primer, followed by screeding, enhances the adhesion between the existing substrate and the Karndean flooring. This ensures a secure and durable bond, preventing issues such as peeling or shifting over time.
  • Crack Prevention: Screeding acts as a protective layer, minimizing the risk of cracks and surface imperfections. This is particularly crucial in high-traffic areas, providing a resilient foundation that stands the test of time.

Red Carpets’ Screeding Process:

At Red Carpets, our commitment to excellence extends to every facet of the flooring journey. Our skilled craftsmen take pride in delivering a screeding process that goes beyond the basics:

  • Expert Assessment: Before screeding begins, our team conducts a thorough assessment of your existing floor, identifying and addressing any specific challenges to ensure optimal results.
  • Buffering: We use an industry-grade electric sander to flatten any imperfections and then vacuum the remaining debris.
  • Quality Priming: We utilise high-quality primers to prepare the substrate for screeding.
  • Professional Screeding: Our fitters bring a blend of expertise and artistry to the screeding process, ensuring precision and attention to detail at every step. We use a trowel to spread the screed and a spiked roller to remove the remaining air bubbles from the screed, which ensures a perfectly flat surface.

Do I need underlay?

When planning new carpets we are often asked “Do I need underlay?”.  Whilst underlay can seem like a waste of money as nobody ever sees it, we do recommend having underlay under carpets for the following reasons:

  • It absorbs the wear and tear on the carpet, reduces pile flattening and helps to lengthen the life of your carpet.
  • It provides excellent insulation helping to reduce heat loss … and fuel bills.
  • It absorbs sound in the room (and in the room below).
  • It captures dust rather than allowing it to be moved around by the air.
  • It provides bounce and softness underfoot, no matter how ‘thin’ the carpet is.
  • Carpets are stretched onto grippers and underlay sits inside the gripper bar, so hides the ridge that would be apparent if underlay wasn’t used.

If you would like new carpets come and see our vast range in South Wigston, Market Harborough or Anstey.  With luxury carpets to discontinued lines at bargain prices, we’re bound to have whatever you’re looking for!
